Metalloinvest upgrades Blast Furnace #2 at Ural Steel
Metalloinvest, a leading global iron ore and HBI producer and supplier, and one of the regional producers of high-quality steel, has launched the Blast Furnace #2 at Ural Steel. Investment in the project amounted to 2.5 bn roubles (excluding VAT).
The main process equipment supplier is Danieli Corus.
Nazim Efendiev, CEO of Management Company Metalloinvest, commented: “The re-equipping of blast furnaces is an important stage in Ural Steel's comprehensive development programme. As a result of its implementation, we will have a modern, powerful production facility.”
Ildar Iskakov, Managing Director of Ural Steel, said: “We have completed the technical re-equipping of Blast Furnace #2. Next in line is Blast Furnace #3. Altogether they will produce about 2 mn tonnes of pig iron a year while reducing coke consumption and cutting costs.”
Compared to a traditional blast furnace, Blast Furnace #2 has the advantage of being able to operate on a charge using up to 95% iron ore pellets content in the charge. The new furnace has a maximum capacity of 760,000 tonnes of iron per year. The warranty period of operation of the furnace is over 15 years without requiring costly overhauls. The patented lining and cooling system technology makes it possible to promptly replace the copper horizontal cooler in the event of burnout without a long furnace shutdown. Blast Furnace #2 is also equipped with an expert process analysis and control system which allows to determine the optimum technological mode and to control the blast furnace automatically by monitoring and analysing multiple parameters.
Metalloinvest's large-scale investment project is being implemented as part of Ural Steel's strategic integrated production development programme. Its measures will improve the enterprise's efficiency and reduce its environmental footprint. The Company plans to start reconstruction of Blast Furnace #3 in February 2021.back to news list
